PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona will have its first physicians’ union after doctors from the state’s largest healthcare employer voted to unionize.

Primary care physicians in the Valley voted Wednesday to form a union to collectively bargain with Banner Health.
Organizers said the union will fight for better pay, working conditions and patient protections. Banner Health is the state’s largest private employer.
The push to unionize stemmed from an ongoing unfair labor lawsuit filed against Banner in May. A month later, a petition was filed for over 200 Banner employees seeking union representation.
In a statement to Arizona’s Family, Banner Health said its culture is one of its greatest strengths and that it would not allow a union organizing campaign, which it said is built on the concerns of a few, to define who the company is or how it cares for its people and patients.

Banner said claims being circulated do not reflect the experience of thousands of its clinicians and team members.
