Federal officials said Calvin Eklund entered a bank at 27th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 p.m. Monday with a small dog. According to court documents, when entering the bank, Eklund yelled something to the effect of, “This is a f***ing robbery!”

He fired his rifle once into the ceiling, officials said. No one was hurt.

Eklund then allegedly demanded money from a teller. Approximately $2,118 was put in the suspect’s bag, officials said.

He left the bank in a white Ford van, which was later spotted by a Phoenix Police Department helicopter, federal officials said in a probable cause statement.

Phoenix police followed the suspect until an officer in a cruiser used a “grappler” to stop the van about 15 minutes north of Anthem on Interstate 17.

Bank surveillance video showed Eklund in gray or beige shorts, cowboy boots, a dark long-sleeve shirt, and a red baseball cap with “TRUMP” written across the front, which were the same clothing items he was wearing when he was pulled over, officials said. Investigators found two rifles and a handgun in the van.

Eklund allegedly admitted to the robbery after being taken into custody.

He told police he had several mental health conditions that he was trying to get help for. He said he “snapped” just before allegedly robbing the bank.

Eklund faces charges of bank robbery and discharging a firearm during a crime.
