WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Sedgwick County District Court judge sentenced a 29-year-old Wichita man to life in prison without the possibility of parole for nearly four decades for convictions in the April 17 shooting death of his estranged wife.

A “hard 25″ sentence against Joshua Orlando follows his guilty plea to first-degree murder in the shooting that killed Ivy Unruh. The “hard 25″ is a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
Orlando faces an additional 13.75 years (13 years, nine months) for aggravated kidnapping.
“As a result, Orlando will not be eligible for parole for approximately 38.75 years, the Sedgwick County District Attorney‘s Office explained.
Unruh’s loved ones spoke in the courtroom on Friday.
“No sentence can bring Ivy back. Nothing can undo what has been done,” said her mother, Amy Unruh. “But I ask the court to remember that this crime did not only take one life, but it changed the life of everyone who knew and loved Ivy.”
Her father, Matthew Keith Jellison, said that the sentencing helps a little with the process of recovery.
“We wanted the maximum sentence allowed for the judge, which was accomplished and completely justified, and that’s the only item the moron can appeal,” Jellison said. “And I feel confident long after I’m gone, he’ll still be sitting where he needs to be.”

Jellison said that what helped the family get through this difficult time the most is the support they’ve received from others.
“When an event like this happens, people either kind of avoid you or come out of the woodwork to support you, and we’ve seen nothing but that from everywhere, from people we haven’t spoke to in 20 years that we worked with and watched Ivy grow up and appreciated her,” Jellison said. “And I think if you’re going to try to make something like this survivable, that’s the only way you want to go about it, with as much of that as you can.”
Following Friday’s sentencing, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett made a comment.
“Any woman who’s out there, any person who’s out there in a situation like this, get out. Get out as far and as fast as you can,” Bennett said. “And for every guy, grow up.”
