BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) — A father is dead, and his teenage daughter is in the hospital after a shooting in a Buckeye neighborhood early Thursday morning.

Police have identified the victim as 36-year-old David Washington. The suspect, 22-year-old Jesus Lastra Perez, was arrested a short time after the shooting.
Around 1 a.m., Buckeye police received reports of a shooting at a home in the Sienna Hills neighborhood, near McDowell Road and Verrado Way.
Once officers arrived, they found Washington and a 17-year-old girl who had been shot. Washington was pronounced dead at the scene, and the teen was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Carissa Planalp, public information officer with Buckeye police, said the two victims were father and daughter.
Planalp said a Buckeye police sergeant had just finished her shift and was on her way home when she heard the call come out. Realizing she was close to the neighborhood, the off-duty officer immediately went to the scene and found a large group of people directing her to the suspected shooter.
“She encounters a large group of people who are pointing to the individual who they say ‘that’s the shooter, that’s the shooter,’” Planalp said.
The sergeant was able to detain Perez until more officers arrived at the scene.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a fight inside the home when the alleged shooter opened fire, striking the two victims.

“This is a large, blended family that lives in this two-story home…a lot of people,” she said.
Police confirmed that Perez is the son of Washington’s ex-wife and lived at the home.
Authorities stress that there is no threat to the community, and there are no outstanding suspects.
“We realize that this is a very large scene. It is very upsetting for people to wake up in the morning first thing, seeing police lights outside their door. We want people to understand that there is no ongoing threat to the community,” Planalp explained.
Authorities are continuing to interview witnesses to gather additional details. The investigation remains ongoing.
