MANDAN, N.D. (KVLY/Gray News) — A 1-year-old boy is expected to fully recover after he survived an alleged attack by his mother that took the lives of his two siblings.

The family of 1-year-old Colton said last week that his surgery went well and he finally smiled, according to a GoFundMe page.
“We are so deeply grateful for the incredible support from our community. Colton is recovering in the hospital—his surgery went well, and doctors expect a full physical recovery from this attack. Last night, he finally smiled at us, and it was the most beautiful thing we’ve ever seen. After everything we’ve been through, seeing that smile brought a wave of overwhelming emotion and relief,” the page read.
The family said Colton survived the Aug. 6 attack in Mandan, North Dakota.
According to the affidavit from Mandan police, 22-year-old Kailey Erhart attacked her three young children. Colton survived, but a 5-month-old and a 3-year-old died.
Erhart is charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, three counts of aggravated assault and one misdemeanor count of domestic violence.
According to the affidavit, officers were dispatched to the home on Aug. 6 for a report that a mother had stabbed her children. When an officer entered the home, he found Erhart holding a kitchen knife to her own throat, covered in blood. She reportedly dropped the knife and told officers to kill her. She was taken into custody.
Following a trail of blood through the home, officers found three young children lying motionless on a bed in a bedroom. All three had injuries to their necks.

The affidavit states that before officers arrived, Erhart chased the children’s father and grandmother from the home with a knife. The father told investigators he was able to wrestle a pistol away from Erhart, disassemble it, and throw the pieces throughout the house before Erhart locked him out.
Video recovered from the father’s phone showed Erhart carrying one of the children while holding the pistol at her hip. In the video, Erhart tells the father, “Say goodbye to your kids.”
Erhart reportedly told investigators she had placed the children on the bed and believed their throats had been cut before she did so. She said she remembered having the knife in her hands when police arrived but did not remember everything that happened.
The affidavit also states that the couple had been in the process of separating and that the father had previously reported to mental health services that Erhart had made threats to harm herself and the children. Child Protective Services had been made aware of those threats.
Erhart was committed to a mental health facility within the prior 12 to 18 months, was taking medication and was cleared to be with the children at the time of the attack, according to the affidavit.
Erhart made her initial court appearance Aug. 8. According to KFYR, she will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 6. She remains in jail on a $3 million bond.
