MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A Mesa man will spend more than two decades behind bars following the violent attack on a woman more than two years ago.

Kenneth Brauer, 34, was sentenced to 22 years in prison this week, following his June conviction on multiple felony charges related to domestic violence, according to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.

In January 2024, Brauer’s live-in girlfriend called 911 to report that Brauer had come home drunk and tried to have sex with her.
The woman said that when she refused, Brauer punched, slapped, hit and repeatedly bit her. He then choked her until she vomited and smothered her face in it, prosecutors said, before pressing his knee against her neck.
Brauer also stopped the woman from calling for help before sexually assaulting her, according to prosecutors.
The deputy county attorney on the case said the beating left the woman’s jaw “so swollen” she “physically couldn’t open her jaw,” at which point she gave up trying to resist.

“She thought she was going to die,” the prosecutor said, “and if she was going to die, she wanted to go out with her dignity.”
A jury convicted Brauer in June on charges including attempted sexual assault, kidnapping, five counts of aggravated assault, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of assault and preventing the use of a telephone in an emergency.
“A cry for help from this victim was heard by first responders, police, and ultimately our prosecutors who meticulously put this case together for a sentence that puts this man behind bars for over two decades,” Mitchell wrote in a statement. “This offender’s horrific, violent nature towards his romantic partner should never be felt or seen by anyone else in our community.”
