WASHINGTON (CNN) — A man convicted in a string of armed robberies in Washington, D.C. is facing at least 31 years in prison.

But Shamell Naquan Joyner’s trial took an unusual turn during jury deliberations last month.
Jurors found Chinese currency and a suspicious white powder inside clothing that had been entered into evidence.
Prosecutors, law enforcement and the defense team apparently did not know the items were there.

The judge questioned each juror and instructed them not to consider the discovery.
The judge later denied Joyner’s request for a mistrial.
The jury found Joyner guilty on 13 counts but deadlocked on 15 others.
The FBI declined to comment when asked how agents apparently missed the extra evidence.
