CAMP VERDE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man from Phoenix was arrested for kidnapping after an overnight high-speed pursuit on Interstate 17 in northern Arizona.

The Camp Verde Marshal’s Office said a deputy pulled over a driver around midnight Thursday on I-17 near State Route 260.
The marshal’s office said the driver, 22-year-old John Sanchez, was driving from Phoenix with a woman in the passenger’s seat.
During the traffic stop, a K-9 was deployed, and Sanchez sped away from the deputy. It was then discovered that the passenger was trying to get out of the vehicle, and she had called 911 to report that Sanchez would not let her out.
Based on the passenger’s report, deputies kept pursuing the vehicle on suspicion of kidnapping. The marshal’s office said Sanchez’s vehicle reached speeds over 100 mph during the chase, and he was throwing items from the vehicle.
Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers and air support were called to help. DPS used spike strips on I-17 north of Munds Park to stop the vehicle.
Sanchez reportedly ran from the freeway into a nearby wooded area. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, DPS SWAT Team and Verde Valley Regional SWAT Team all helped look for Sanchez.

The suspect was found around 7 a.m. and taken into custody. Authorities helped the passenger find proper assistance.
While searching Sanchez’s vehicle, deputies reportedly found one pound of psilocybin mushrooms and nearly a pound of marijuana. They also reported finding about 117 grams of cocaine on the side of the freeway where Sanchez was seen throwing items from his vehicle.
He was booked in Yavapai County on charges of kidnapping, endangerment and several counts of drug possession.
