GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — An 18-year-old man was sentenced to prison for robbing a 12-year-old boy at gunpoint for his e-bike earlier this year in Gilbert.

Dyllin Keys received a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to armed robbery, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
On February 6, Keys and another unnamed 14-year-old boy targeted the young victim on a trail near Greenfield Junior High.
Keys pointed a handgun at the child’s chest and told him to hand over the e-bike or be shot, Arizona’s Family previously reported. Keys also threatened to shoot the boy if he called police. After Keys and the 14-year-old left with the bike, the boy called 911.
Gilbert police found and arrested Keys shortly after, and he was indicted in March. His trial was in July.

In a statement Monday, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said the sentence for Keys “sends a clear message that anyone who tries to terrorize a kid in Maricopa County will pay for their crime.”
“No child should ever have to stare down the barrel of a gun and have to call 911 in tears over being robbed,” she said. “The fear in the victim’s voice was heartbreaking, but he showed tremendous courage by calling 911. Because of his bravery and the swift response by Gilbert Police, this defendant was caught within minutes.”
