PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A fire damaged three houses in the Phoenix neighborhood of Maryvale Thursday night, and crews rushed to save pets from the flames.

The fire broke out on Encanto Boulevard, south of Thomas Road, near 35th Avenue, around 9 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from two houses. While firefighters battled the fire, it spread to a third house.
Because of the fire’s size, the assignment was bumped up to a first alarm, which brings in more engines, crews and resources to the scene.

Firefighters said they rescued four dogs and a couple of birds from the flames.
The fire was eventually put out, leaving 11 people looking for a place to stay. No one was hurt.
It is unclear what sparked the fire.
