Police officer arrested after reporting for duty while impaired, department says

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) – An officer in North Carolina has been arrested after allegedly showing up to work impaired.

According to the Huntersville Police Department, Officer Michael Ciarleglio was displaying signs of impairment when he reported to duty on July 15.

Ciarleglio was subsequently arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

Huntersville Police Chief Brian Vaughan has since recommended the immediate firing of Ciarleglio.

“Our community deserves officers who uphold the law, and when those standards are violated, we will act decisively and appropriately,” Vaughan said. “We take these matters extremely seriously, and we will not excuse or overlook conduct that falls short of the standards we expect from every member of this department.”

Records showed Ciarleglio was released from the Mecklenburg County jail after he posted a $5,000 bond.

Ciarleglio’s driver’s license has also been revoked for 30 days, court records stated.
