DPS: Semi driver was sipping red wine from water bottle on Phoenix freeway

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A commercial truck driver was caught sipping red wine from a water bottle while behind the wheel of a massive rig and nearly took out a state trooper before finally pulling over, Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say.

On July 2, DPS says highway patrol troopers received several calls about a semi-truck driving erratically on southbound I-10.

The driver reportedly swerved across lanes, did not stop when troopers tried to pull him over and almost hit a DPS vehicle. The driver finally stopped near Elliot Road.

Troopers noticed several signs of impairment when talking with the driver, including confusion and a smell of alcohol. Sobriety tests confirmed the driver was intoxicated and a breath test showed a .227 BAC, officials said.

The driver was arrested for DUI. When they searched the truck, troopers reportedly found bottles of red wine and a reusable water bottle that wine had been poured into.

“Drinking and driving in a regular passenger car is already dangerous. Drinking and driving a massive vehicle infinitely increases the risk of life-threatening collisions,” DPS officials said in a statement.

The driver has not been publicly identified.
