BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN/Gray News) – Inmates took control of a jail for several hours after overpowering correctional staff in North Carolina.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said 88 inmates and three guards were inside the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center when the takeover began around 5 a.m. Monday.
One of the guards escaped shortly after being held hostage. The two other guards were later released along with 18 inmates after successful negotiations.

Just before 2 p.m., authorities said they cleared the facility, all inmates have been accounted for and the takeover is over.

Details of how the inmates overran the guards have not been released.
