Waymo pulls thousands of robotaxis after Phoenix freeway closure mistakes

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Waymo’s fleet of driverless taxis that can drive on freeways hit a setback when they were recalled for going through construction zones.

The Mountain View, California-based company pulled 3,871 Jaguar cars with the fifth-generation automated driving system for software updates.

, the freeway-capable self-driving cars did not recognize ramp closures in construction zones in Arizona and California.

Federal officials say the cars drove past ramp closure signs into pre-planned freeway construction zones once on April 11 and five times on April 19 in Phoenix.

Seven self-driving cars went between cones marking a freeway construction lane closure in the San Francisco Bay Area on May 19.

“Driving at speed in a freeway construction zone increases the potential for collisions,” the recall notice said.

Waymo temporarily prevented robotaxis from driving on freeways while it investigated the issue.

The affected cars were made between March 17, 2022, and May 19.

The recall started June 8.

Waymo began offering rides on Phoenix freeways back in November, 2025.
