Joe Campbell told 13 News the wildlife warfare took place right outside his kitchen window in Mayer, Arizona.

Campbell said he noticed two squirrels defending their burrow, but one scampered away when he went outside to video the fight.

He said the lone squirrel continued to stand down the snake and survived the encounter.

It is likely that it was a mated pair, and they could have been defending their babies.

While gopher snakes are not venomous, they are predators who would make a quick meal of young squirrels.
