Suspect sentenced for unprovoked attack at Laos Transit Center in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The man accused of an unprovoked attack at the Laos Transit Center in Tucson late last year has been sentenced.

On Tuesday, June 2, Godwin Bloomer-Igbokwe was handed a five-year sentence in the state prison system. The state has asked for six years, while the defense requested a four-year term.

The 28-year-old Bloomer-Igbokwe had been facing charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated assault resulting in serious injury. He ended up pleading guilty to aggravated assault.

The Tucson Police Department said Bloomer-Igbokwe attacked another man in a bathroom at the transit center near Irvington and Park around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30.

The TPD said the victim was “seemingly unaware that the suspect was in the bathroom, opened the bathroom door, and was immediately struck in the head by the suspect with a (piece of metal).”

The TPD said Bloomer-Igbokwe took a bus to the transit center before the incident and fled the scene before officers arrived.

The victim suffered significant head injuries and was transported to a local hospital. According to court documents, a piece of the victim’s skull was found at the scene.

Bloomer-Igbokwe allegedly threatened a second victim with a knife following the initial attack.

It was the 11th violent attack connected to Sun Tran since April.

The 10 other violent attacks connected to Sun Tran since April are listed below.

  • On April 5, 25-year-old Daniel Michael Jr. allegedly attacked a man and a woman with a hatchet at a Sun Link streetcar stop in downtown Tucson. Jacob Couch died from his injuries from the attack, and Michael was charged with murder.
  • On May 12, 42-year-old Frank Rick Lopez allegedly attacked two people with a hatchet at a Sun Tran bus stop near Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde Roads.
  • On July 9, a 15-year-old woman was arrested after a 19-year-old woman was injured during a knife fight on a bus at the Ronstadt Center in Tucson.
  • On July 25, a woman was arrested for allegedly stabbing a man on a bus at the Laos Transit Center in Tucson.
  • On Aug. 11, a man was injured in a stabbing at the Ronstadt Center in downtown Tucson.
  • On Aug. 12, a man was injured in a fight and stabbing at the Loas Transit Center in Tucson.
  • On Aug. 20, a man was injured in a fight and stabbing at the Tohono Tadai Transit Center near the Tucson Mall.
  • On Sept. 9, a Sun Tran driver was injured in an assault at Udall Park in Tucson.
  • On Oct. 6, an elderly man was injured in an attack at a Sun Tran bus stop near Pantano and Stella.
  • On Oct. 14, a man was arrested after allegedly shooting at people while on a Sun Tran bus near Irvington and 13th Avenue.
