ARIZONA CITY, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 An Arizona City man made a remarkable recovery from a stroke that doctors say is incredibly rare. Denzil Lee Johnson suffered a stroke on his daughter\u2019s birthday. His daughter immediately called 911, and now he is back on his feet with no lasting issues.<\/p>\n

Weeks later, Johnson walked back into Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix to reunite with the doctor who helped save his life. He was back on his feet, showing no signs of the medical emergency that could have left him permanently disabled or worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing. It doesn\u2019t happen every time. But when it does, it\u2019s amazing,\u201d said Dr. Dawod.<\/p>\n

A birthday turned into a life-or-death moment<\/h2>\n

The medical crisis began on what should have been a day of celebration. Johnson was on the phone with one of his sons in California when his speech suddenly changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got on the phone and was talking to one of my sons in California, and all of a sudden I started mumbling,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Johnson said something felt off. Those were the warning signs of a stroke. His daughter was the only one home, and she had seconds to make a decision that would determine her father\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew it wasn\u2019t like him. I know my father. The way he was acting, I was like, \u201d This is not normal. I need to call 911 fast,\u201d his daughter said.<\/p>\n

Within an hour, Johnson was airlifted from Arizona City to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix. The reality of what was happening hit him when he arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really scary. I didn\u2019t know what was going on with me, and when I got here, they said I had a stroke. I was like, whoa,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

A recovery doctors call the best possible outcome<\/h2>\n

Johnson spent four days in the hospital and underwent surgery. Doctors say most stroke patients face a long road back to recovery, but Johnson\u2019s case was anything but typical.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people will need physical therapy after to get some of their strength back. For Denzil, he actually went back to normal, which is amazing. This is the best outcome anyone can get,\u201d Dr. Dawod said.<\/p>\n

Johnson was able to walk away with no brain damage. Now, sitting beside the family who didn\u2019t hesitate when it mattered most, he said he is grateful they moved fast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the doctor came in and said this medication saved your life. I said give it here,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

His daughter said she refused to second-guess herself in that critical moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just really thankful because in times like that you have to respond quickly. I didn\u2019t want to sit around and second-guess,\u201d his daughter said.<\/p>\n

How to recognize a stroke and act fast<\/h2>\n

Doctors say one way to act fast is to remember FAST: face drooping, arm weakness, speech trouble \u2014 it\u2019s time to call 911. They warn people not to wait to see if symptoms pass. The faster you get help, the better the outcome.<\/p>\n
