GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A convicted felon with more than a dozen prior arrests is facing kidnapping and assault charges after police shot him inside a Glendale pawn shop on May 20.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened exactly four years after the suspect was released from prison.<\/p>\n

Daren Howard, 33, appeared in court Sunday night, sitting in a chair, after being discharged from the hospital. He told the judge he was shot six times.<\/p>\n

Detectives say Howard, armed with a knife, attempted to force his girlfriend to buy him a gun inside the pawn shop about 10 a.m. Wednesday. Instead, the woman showed the store\u2019s manager a large cut on her hand and mouthed, \u201cCall 911.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding officers say Howard wrapped his arm around the woman\u2019s neck and threatened her with the blade. Police opened fire after a stun gun failed to stop him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a parade of police cars just flooding in. It was just more shocking than anything,\u201d Katherine St. John, who works in the area, said. \u201cLike nothing too dangerous ever happens over here so it was definitely just a nice little wake up call on just how crazy the world can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Court documents describe Howard as a homeless addict with a history of domestic violence who threatened to kill his girlfriend and her children.<\/p>\n

For more than a decade, Howard has accumulated a criminal record. He was arrested as a child.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old served time for multiple burglaries and a dangerous drug charge and has also been booked for multiple probation violations. <\/p>\n

Court records from his previous arrests show he first drank alcohol at age 6, then started smoking marijuana at 8 and using cocaine at 13. He eventually became addicted to methamphetamine.<\/p>\n

He is being held on a $350,000 cash-only bond.<\/p>\n
