Mittry Lake,(AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 Crews are investigating what sparked a fast-moving brush fire that ripped through the Mittry Lake area over the weekend, burning vegetation in its path and forcing campers to move as flames got too close.<\/p>\n

Witnesses at the scene said the fire may have started when teenagers were playing with fireworks, though fire officials say the cause has not been confirmed and remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is what we were told: a bunch of kids playing with fireworks\u2026 they were messing around and then blew up in their face,\u201d lake visitor Tia Forrest said.<\/p>\n

Forrest, said she first noticed what looked like a small campfire Saturday night and called 911 as it quickly grew.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looked like a campfire and it kept growing in about 4 or 5 minutes and so I immediately called 911,\u201d Forrest said.<\/p>\n

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Saturday. Another witness said the flames initially appeared concentrated in one area, leading some to believe it might be a structure fire at first.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought it was a structure fire because it was burning really intense in one spot\u2026 didn\u2019t think it was a big of a deal because it stayed that size for quite sometimes,\u201d said Nate Ivey.<\/p>\n

In a post on social media, Rural Metro officials said crews arrived to find a fast-moving brush fire and immediately requested help from the Bureau of Land Management.<\/p>\n

Forrest said she and her family left their campsite as the fire moved closer. A former firefighter herself, she stayed alert through the night, noting how quickly conditions can shift.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stayed up just to make sure, cause wildfires you never know, and winds can create their own ecosystem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bureau officials say the fire was held to under 200 acres and no structures were burned. <\/p>\n

The fire is now 70% contained, officials said.<\/p>\n

Firefighters are staying in the area to monitor the hot spots.<\/p>\n
