TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – As the Tucson Unified School District works through budget planning for the next school year, the governing board approved a new top-level administrative role.<\/p>\n

It happened during a meeting on Tuesday, May 26, and it drew criticism from some district employees and their union, who say frontline workers are still waiting on raises.<\/p>\n

At Tuesday night\u2019s meeting, the board voted 3-1 to create a Deputy Superintendent position and appoint Shawna Rodriguez<\/b>, previously a regional assistant superintendent, to the role.<\/p>\n

\u2018They don\u2019t have money\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n

Several employees represented by Local 449<\/b>, which includes transportation and operations workers, spoke during public comment about pay and staffing shortages.<\/p>\n

Nicholas Bruno, a bus driver, told the board some of the district\u2019s lowest-paid employees are struggling.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen really that our lowest-paid folks are getting- it\u2019s almost like, not even the bottom of the barrel,\u201d Bruno said.<\/p>\n

Bruno said workers have repeatedly been told there isn\u2019t money for raises.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re constantly telling us that they don\u2019t have money and they have to make cuts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

That frustration intensified after the board\u2019s first action item of the night approved the new deputy superintendent job.<\/p>\n

Eve, another school bus driver, questioned the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask for, \u2018hey, where\u2019s the money from the raise?\u2019 and they\u2019re like \u2018we don\u2019t have the money,\u2019 and then they create a brand new position!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

What will the deputy superintendent do?<\/b><\/h3>\n

District leaders did not publicly disclose the specific responsibilities or salary tied to the new position during the meeting.<\/p>\n

Rodriguez addressed the board following the vote, outlining her priorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cExpand relationships and support the success of our students, our departments, and our TUSD community,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n

Local 449 representatives said the district\u2019s operational vacancies \u2014 including bus driver shortages \u2014 make the timing of a new administrative post difficult to justify.<\/p>\n

Janetta Peck, a bus monitor, said workers want to feel valued.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that we can feel more valued and feel like our jobs matter, because we do know they matter,\u201d Peck said.<\/p>\n

One board member votes no<\/b><\/h3>\n

Governing Board member Sadie Shaw cast the lone \u201cno\u201d vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not agree with the creation of a new administrative position in these troubled times,\u201d Shaw said.<\/p>\n

Following the vote, the governing board said a separate administrative position \u2014 Assistant Superintendent of Student Success \u2014 had been removed.<\/p>\n

That created budget space for the deputy superintendent role. The salary for that removed position was , according to comments during the meeting.<\/p>\n
