TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Marana Police Department said the deaths of a man and a woman on Monday, May 25, were the result of a murder-suicide, but their two children were not hurt.<\/p>\n

Around 5 p.m., officers were called to a home in the 6700 block of West Alegria Drive, which is near Silverbell and Cortaro, for reports of a shooting.<\/p>\n

The MPD said 36-year-old Mikaela Durfey was found shot to death in the driveway of her home.<\/p>\n

Durfey\u2019s ex-husband, 37-year-old Brian Schnurr, was quickly identified as a suspect. Officers then started looking for his vehicle, a blue Dodge Challenger.<\/p>\n

The vehicle was found in the parking lot of a popular steakhouse in the 8500 block of North Silverbell Road, less than a mile from the family\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

13 News\u2019 Dan Marries<\/b><\/u><\/i> was there when Schnurr\u2019s vehicle was surrounded by armed officers. He saw two MPD vehicles box in the suspect vehicle and watched as officers pulled the couple\u2019s two young children from the vehicle unharmed.<\/p>\n

Dan then saw two armed officers running into the desert area near the parking lot, where Schnurr was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.<\/p>\n

Apparently, Schnurr shot his wife and then drove to the parking lot with his kids in the vehicle. He then left the kids in the car and ran into the desert area.<\/p>\n

The family\u2019s home is in the Desert Vista neighborhood, where residents were mourning the incident.<\/p>\n

By Tuesday morning, there was a simple but powerful memorial to Durfey.<\/p>\n

A vase of flowers, a balloon, and a candle sat in front of her home, a solemn remembrance for the life lost.<\/p>\n

Several neighbors talked with 13 News but didn\u2019t want to go on camera. They said they heard multiple gunshots around 5 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

Charles Wipperman is a longtime resident of Desert Vista and lives just a few doors down from where the crime unfolded.<\/p>\n

Wipperman said he didn\u2019t hear the gunshots, but said he feels for the family.<\/p>\n

\u201c30 years we\u2019ve lived here,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t think of anything sad, anything bad that has happened until then. Anytime somebody passes away, it\u2019s sad. Whether it\u2019s a friend or a family member, when someone is murdered, no matter who it is, that is horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wipperman said the incident doesn\u2019t change how he feels about his community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to move out of this neighborhood,\u201d he said. \u201cI think this neighborhood has been very nice. It\u2019s just a nice, friendly community, and this is a very sad and shocking event to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to court records, Durfey filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025. Durfey was a licensed counselor<\/b><\/u><\/i>, while Schnurr was a chiropractor in Tucson.<\/b><\/u><\/i><\/p>\n

It has been a violent week in southern Arizona.<\/b><\/u><\/i> Since May 20, seven people and one dog have died in separate shootings across the area.<\/p>\n
