FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 Arizona\u2019s backcountry has seen a rash of serious and deadly accidents involving off-road vehicles. <\/p>\n

Now, heading into the busy long holiday weekend, rural law enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols on Arizona back roads to make sure drivers are operating their off-road vehicles safely.<\/p>\n

The long holiday weekend will draw people from across the state to cooler areas like Flagstaff.<\/p>\n

Jon Paxton with the Coconino County Sheriff\u2019s Office said they are adding extra patrols as a precaution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have extra staffing out at this time,\u201d Paxton said. \u201cWe have within our larger area just to be out and be more visible.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said their deputies are focused on search and rescue, fire prevention, and general safety.<\/p>\n

They will also be patrolling for off-highway vehicle violations, which can be deadly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the years, we\u2019ve had some tragic incidents up in Northern Arizona and around the state,\u201d Paxton said. \u201cThese right now can reach up to 70, 80mph, so people need to understand that and be as safe as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last summer, a 19-month-old toddler was killed when his grandfather flipped an OHV outside of Flagstaff.<\/p>\n

However, these crashes are common. Two weeks ago, nine people were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and an OHV near Lake Pleasant.<\/p>\n

Paxton adds that his office sees fatalities almost every year, and many people don\u2019t know the off-road safety laws, which makes it even more dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate it\u2019s something we see often,\u201d Paxton said. \u201cPeople need to understand those rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

All OHV drivers must have helmets, a driver\u2019s license, and take a 10-minute online safety course.<\/p>\n

Paxton said Coconino County will also have DUI checkpoints this holiday weekend to catch people drinking and driving, which goes for OHVs, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot more people out on those roads now,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s children, there\u2019s dogs, there\u2019s pets. So it is something that you know don\u2019t drink and drink. Don\u2019t do it in an OHV either. It\u2019s just dangerous, and we\u2019ve got the statistics to prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n
