PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 The Trump administration is changing its policy when it comes to immigrants seeking permanent residency in the form of a green card.<\/p>\n

This says that many immigrants seeking green cards will have to leave the country to complete the process.<\/p>\n

After a person gets sponsored for a green card, there are two ways in which the application process moves forward.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Adjustment of Status\u2019 process happens for people who are inside the United States, while the \u2018Consular Processing\u2019 is for people outside the U.S.<\/p>\n

Immigration attorneys say the \u2018Adjustment of Status\u2019 process is typically faster and cheaper in the long-run.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u2019s new policy directs officials to treat the adjustment of status process an an \u201cextraordinary\u201d relief and an act of \u201cadministrative grace\u201d.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no definition of what would constitute an extraordinary circumstances and it would be left up to officer\u2019s discretion.<\/p>\n

The latest estimates from DHS say that there were with green cards as of 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nation\u2019s immigration system properly. From now on, an alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a\u00a0Green\u00a0Card must return to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended\u00a0instead of incentivizing loopholes. When aliens apply from their home country, it reduces the need to\u00a0find and\u00a0remove\u00a0those\u00a0who\u00a0decide to\u00a0slip into the shadows and remain in the U.S. illegally after being denied\u00a0residency,\u201d<\/p>\n
