(13 News) &#8211; It\u2019s Mental Health Awareness Month \u2014 a reminder to slow down, take breaks, and find healthy ways to manage stress. Cold exposure may also increase brain chemicals linked to alertness and focus, activating the body\u2019s natural \u201cfight-or-flight\u201d response \u2014 then, for some people, a calmer feeling on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>At Havn Plunge and Restore in northwest Tucson, owner Paige Salzbrenner says she first tried cold plunging for a mental health reset after moving to Michigan in the middle of winter. She started with just 30 seconds and wanted to share that feeling with others.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows cold-water immersion \u2014 typically around 50 to 60 degrees \u2014 can bring quick relief for some people. Some studies also suggest possible longer-term benefits like lower cortisol, improved mood regulation, and greater resilience to stress.<\/p>\n<p>When you first step in, the body feels an initial shock: stress and discomfort. Supporters say that\u2019s when the mental challenge starts \u2014 and when breathing and focus matter most. Salzbrenner says the cold can \u201cquiet the mind,\u201d forcing you to concentrate on your breath and body instead of racing thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Cold-water immersion is also linked to improvements in energy, focus, and mood. They also reported decreases in negative moods such as tension, anger, depression, exhaustion, and confusion.
