TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Desert Thunder Squadron is expanding a program designed to help retiring Davis-Monthan Air Force Base airmen transition into civilian careers, addressing a challenge faced by hundreds of service members each year.<\/p>\n

More than 600 airmen at the base finish their military service annually, and many have never written a resume. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows nearly 300,000 veterans were unemployed in 2025.<\/p>\n

The \u201cOne Year Away\u201d program encourages airmen to begin planning their post-military careers at least a year before they leave service. The squadron hosted a hands-on workshop at the Pima Community College Aviation Technology Campus to connect retiring service members with civilian employers.<\/p>\n

Mark Irvin, former president of the Desert Thunder Squadron, said retiring airmen bring valuable skills to civilian employers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know how to lead people, they know how to show up to work on time, they know how to see a job through to completion. All the things that folks in the civilian sector would love to have,\u201d Irvin said.<\/p>\n

Many retirees entered the Air Force directly from high school. While some earned college and advanced degrees during their service, they never had to navigate a traditional job application process.<\/p>\n

At the workshop, service members work with mentors and human resources personnel from healthcare, construction, finance, and more industries to assess their strengths and interests. Participants prepare resumes and upload them to a portal that connects them with Tucson employers.<\/p>\n

The program helped 75 airmen last year. This year, the Desert Thunder Squadron has partnered with Edge4Vets, a national organization that has provided career guidance to more than 3,000 service members.<\/p>\n

While the program does not require participants to remain in Tucson, organizers hope exposure to local opportunities will encourage them to stay.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur hope is that as you get exposed to Tucson and what it has to offer, you\u2019ll say \u2018Wow, why wouldn\u2019t I give this town another look and another thought?\u2019\u201d Irvin said.<\/p>\n

The program currently focuses on Air Force personnel but may expand to other military branches. Another workshop is scheduled at Tucson Medical Center this fall.<\/p>\n
