TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Hopefully by now you\u2019ve met our furry coworker, Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy-in-training, Junie.<\/p>\n

And now we\u2019re asking the experts the No. 1 question guide dog handlers and puppy raisers get: \u2018Can I pet your dog?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways ask first before you ever approach or want to pet a guide dog,\u201d said Jane Flower the youth outreach program supervisor for Guide Dogs for the Blind. <\/p>\n

Flower knows what she\u2019s talking about, because her guide dog Pilaf draws a lot of attention with her cuteness!<\/p>\n

And you could also say she wrote the book on etiquette.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf somebody\u2019s actively walking with their guide dog, that dog is, at that moment is actively guiding,\u201d Flower said. \u201cSo, keeping somebody safe, keeping their handler safe as they\u2019re walking through a space.<\/p>\n

Some guide dog users report that it can feel isolating when people are more interested in their dog than in speaking with them, like Southern Arizona resident Christine Moreno.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be really great if we were having some sort of interaction and they just spoke to me \u2013 to me, not the dog \u2013 as a regular person,\u201d Moreno said.<\/p>\n

Puppies in training to become guides do need to learn how to greet people.<\/p>\n

Tucson puppy raiser Teri Tommet said it\u2019s usually a welcome interaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, most people are very good at asking, you know, if they can pet, and then we\u2019ll just approach them again that you know, if you want to pet her, then you can help me train them,\u201d Tommet said.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind, it\u2019s up to the handler.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome handlers, you know, may not let anybody pet their guide dog,\u201d Flower said. \u201cOther handlers love people to interact with their guide dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said it\u2019s appropriate to ask a handler to interact with their dog if they\u2019re at rest, like sitting on a park bench or at a coffee shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou definitely don\u2019t want to distract the dog or try to pet the dog when they\u2019re actively guiding,\u201d Flower said.<\/p>\n

And distractions can include using a high-pitched voice or staring at the dog.<\/p>\n

Tommet showed our colleague Ashley Bowerman how to greet her puppy-in-training, Brandy.<\/p>\n

\u201cApproach her very slowly. Don\u2019t reach out your hand or anything like that,\u201d Tommet said. \u201cBut as you approach her, once you get up to her then you can, you know, pet her.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the puppy starts jumping or getting excited, you should turn away.<\/p>\n

But Brandy is 11 months old and knows how to behave, so she gets a reward.<\/p>\n

Tommet said it can be mutually beneficial – you help train the dog, and you get a fun interaction with an adorable puppy. <\/p>\n

As for working teams: \u201cNine times out of 10 people are going to be so courteous and they love to share their dogs with the public and talk about them because they\u2019re proud of them and proud to be out there with them,\u201d Tommet said.<\/p>\n

Flowers and Tommet added that people sometimes ask if they can give the dog one of their dog\u2019s treats, or maybe food from the table in a restaurant.<\/p>\n

Again, always ask first, usually, the answer will be no.<\/p>\n
