{"id":3592,"date":"2026-07-15T06:03:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T06:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=3592"},"modified":"2026-07-15T06:03:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T06:03:29","slug":"arizona-monsoon-driving-tips-what-to-do-if-a-dust-storm-hits-while-youre-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=3592","title":{"rendered":"Arizona monsoon driving tips: What to do if a dust storm hits while you\u2019re on the road"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p><b>PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 As dust storms rolled through the Valley on Sunday and Monday evenings, many drivers found themselves behind the wheel during the monsoon storms.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=3590\">New survey asks why Arizona teachers are staying, not why they\u2019re leaving<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really dangerous to try and navigate those conditions,\u201d said Kelly Mo with the Arizona Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>From the heavy rain that can make roads slick to the dust storms that can make the road ahead nearly disappear, drivers during an intense monsoon can find themselves in difficult situations to manage.<\/p>\n<p>These are tips from the Arizona Department of Public Safety on what to do if you find yourself in that situation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Immediately check traffic around your vehicle (front, back, sides) and begin slowing down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Completely exit the highway if you can. Do not wait until poor visibility to pull off the roadway.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>DO NOT STOP in a travel lane or emergency lane. Pull completely off the paved portion of the roadway.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Turn off all vehicle lights. You don\u2019t want others to follow you by using your lights as a guide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt buckled.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Be patient. Wait for the storm to pass.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want any lights on your vehicle on because we don\u2019t want a vehicle that\u2019s coming up from behind you to mistake your vehicle as a beacon and then possibly crash into that vehicle,\u201d explained Mo.<\/p>\n<p>At DrivingMBA\u2019s Scottsdale location, 16-year-old Colleen Brousseau is getting a chance to test her driving skills inside a monsoon storm through the driving school\u2019s simulator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely really scary just because, like, you can\u2019t see what\u2019s around you,\u201d she said. \u201cYou don\u2019t know if people can see you. So, you just always have to be on high alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=3589\">Tucson Now: Bill Hiney\u2019s plan for Tombstone City Council<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brousseau, an Arizona native, has been in a car during a monsoon before, but never behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>She says that going through the simulator, mimicking driving in a monsoon in both city and highway settings, will give her much-needed lessons for when she ultimately has to navigate her first monsoon storm behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just have to remember what you\u2019ve learned, and this is going to help me because we have a lot of them in Arizona,\u201d said Brousseau.<\/p>\n<p>The first rule of driving through a dust storm is to avoid getting in that situation in the first place.
