TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Contract negotiations between Sun Tran and Teamsters Local Union 104 are still ongoing, with a final decision expected this weekend. The uncertainty has many riders wondering whether bus routes will remain on schedule Monday\u2014or if a potential strike could impact service.<\/p>\n

Sun Tran says the current contract expired at midnight June 30 after \u201cmany hours of negotiations.\u201d The Teamsters union has already approved an authorized strike for drivers, and Sun Tran says it presented the union with what it calls its \u201cbest and final offer\u201d in the early morning hours of July 1.<\/p>\n

In a statement sent to 13 News, Sun Tran said the proposed agreement reflects \u201ca fair and mutually beneficial outcome,\u201d with \u201ca strong emphasis on safety while providing fiscally responsible economic provisions.\u201d Sun Tran also said, \u201cThe safety of our operators, employees, and the Tucson community remains Sun Tran\u2019s highest priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Safety has been a key sticking point in the negotiations. The talks follow violent crimes that have taken place on Sun Tran buses, including 19 incidents connected to public transit since April 5, 2025<\/b>.<\/p>\n

If the contract offer is rejected, some riders worry a strike could be on the horizon. Riders who rely on Sun Tran as their main form of transportation told 13 News they\u2019re concerned about how service disruptions could affect work, appointments, errands, and travel in the summer heat.<\/p>\n
