TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – One of the University of Arizona fraternities accused of hazing has received its sanctions from the Dean of Students Office.<\/p>\n

Sigma Phi Epsilon was placed on probation until May 31, 2027. It will also have to attend a hazing workshop, do a review of its members, meet monthly with the national charter, and pay a fine of nearly $4,000.<\/p>\n

The accusations against the fraternity included sleep deprivation, forced alcohol consumption, kidnapping, and forced calisthenics. Members were also accused of illegal drug use.<\/p>\n

The Dean of Students Office said it sent confidential surveys to members and interviewed some of the fraternity\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Sigma Phi Epsilon admitted the fraternity had a history of hazing concerns, but it had been working to change that. The changes included a new chapter advisor in fall 2025 and new student leaders for spring 2026. <\/p>\n

The frat admitted members were asked or encouraged to perform calisthenics, but the allegations of kidnapping and sleep deprivation turned out to be unfounded.<\/p>\n

As for the forced alcohol consumption, the fraternity said it happened to one member and was during a non-sanctioned event. Sigma Phi Epsilon said its leadership investigated the incident and expelled and evicted the member responsible.<\/p>\n

According to the survey responses, there was also no evidence of illegal drug use by members of the organization.<\/p>\n

According to an April 29 letter from the Dean of Students Office, Sigma Phi Epsilon was under investigation and was placed on activities suspension.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reported conduct is alleged to have created an environment that endangered UA students,\u201d the Dean of Students Office said in its letter.<\/p>\n

Six other fraternities got into trouble.<\/b><\/u><\/i> More coverage of that story is in the video player above.<\/p>\n

Three of those, Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Chi, and Phi Delta Theta, face the most serious allegations. The three received a letter from the Dean of Students citing hazing allegations, and two were placed on Interim Loss of Recognition. The investigation is ongoing for those three frats, and all three could be shut down.<\/p>\n

The allegations against Sigma Alpha Mu include burns from hot liquids, forced alcohol consumption, alcohol poisoning, blackouts, and hospitalizations.<\/p>\n

Sigma Chi allegedly hosted a party that was alcohol-free, but alcohol was consumed, drugs were knowingly and unknowingly given to members, and multiple members had to go to the hospital.<\/p>\n

Phi Delta Theta was placed on activities suspension for hazing, where members were allegedly subjected to forced alcohol consumption, degradation, humiliation, and other threatening and endangering behaviors.<\/p>\n

The final three frats face less serious allegations.<\/p>\n

The University of Arizona Department said officers saw women going into the Sigma Phi Epsilon house at the direction of fraternity members, despite not having any events scheduled for that day.<\/p>\n

Delta Kappa Epsilon is facing several complaints about loud music and noise.<\/p>\n

Theta Xi was accused of hosting a party with a DJ, loud music, and women, without having the event scheduled.<\/p>\n
