TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Arizona\u2019s primary ballot will include a third party this election cycle: the No Labels Party.<\/p>\n

Over the last year, the party has been trying to officially rename itself the \u201cArizona Independent Party,\u201d but was blocked by a lawsuit, so it will appear on the ballot as \u201cNo Labels\u201d or \u201cN.O.L.\u201d<\/p>\n

Name change blocked by lawsuit<\/b><\/h3>\n

The Arizona Clean Elections Commission was among those that filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State over the proposed name change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe No Labels Party sought to reorganize itself as the Independent Party. And the commission and others filed a lawsuit against the secretary of state about that because we were concerned voters would be confused by that \u2014 and frankly I think the evidence shows that voters would have been more confused than they are,\u201d said Thomas Collins, Executive Director of the Arizona Clean Elections Commission.<\/p>\n

Collins said the name change would have created even more confusion with unaffiliated voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can call myself the king of England, but that doesn\u2019t make it so. But in this case, the No Labels Party wanted to seize that name \u2018independent\u2019 from voters who aren\u2019t part of a party and they didn\u2019t want to have to follow the procedures to do it \u2014 so that means they are the No Labels Party for official purposes,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n

The party is appealing the name change ruling and currently operates the Arizona Independent Party<\/b><\/u><\/i> website, rather than one for Arizona No Labels.<\/p>\n

For this election, the party backs former ASU quarterback Hugh Lytle.<\/p>\n

Party chairman and former Phoenix Mayor Paul Johnson said his party is focused on voters in the middle of the political spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe big problems we have in society today \u2014 they can no longer be solved by the two parties. They can\u2019t work with one another. They can\u2019t stand one another,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Johnson said he does not view No Labels as a spoiler in the race.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna try to create a challenge to them \u2014 we\u2019re trying to create another choice,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

He said the party appeals to voters who value civil, human, and equal rights, as well as free trade and markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not trying to get rid of the two parties, I\u2019m trying to get the best of them,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Arizona No Labels separate from national party<\/b><\/h3>\n

Johnson said No Labels Arizona is completely separate from the National No Labels Party and the two are not affiliated.<\/p>\n

Arizona has an open primary, meaning independent voters \u2014 the state\u2019s largest voting group \u2014 can still participate. As Collins clarified, Arizona has no \u201cIndependent Party\u201d as of this election.<\/p>\n
