(AP) – President Donald Trump again insisted the United States should control Greenland instead of Denmark, renewing tensions in Europe at a NATO summit. Trump spoke during a meeting Tuesday with the summit host, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. <\/p>\n

Trump called the semiautonomous island \u201can important part\u201d for the United States, as he repeated the false claim that it\u2019s surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships and said he won\u2019t let Greenland be threatened. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark,\u201d Trump told reporters during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. <\/p>\n

Upon arriving at the meeting, Trump lashed out at European partners for resisting his efforts to take control of Greenland and for not supporting his war in Iran. <\/p>\n

But by day\u2019s end, he described a gathering of unity and \u201ctremendous love,\u201d and praised member nations on their progress in increasing their defense spending. <\/p>\n

Speaking at the summit a day after Trump again expressed a desire for the U.S. to control Greenland, Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, \u201cGreenland is of course not for sale.\u201d <\/p>\n

Frederiksen also said her country is \u201cready to defend every inch of NATO including our own territory.\u201d <\/p>\n

Greenland\u2019s prime minister also reiterated that the territory is not for sale in a social media post following Trump\u2019s comments. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe future of Greenland is decided by us in Greenland and not by others. Repeated calls for the takeover or control of our country do not change this,\u201d Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a post on Facebook. <\/p>\n
