(AP) – Lashing out at Spain and calling it a \u201cterrible partner,\u201d President Donald Trump on Wednesday revived an earlier threat to break off trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpain is a wasted cause,\u201d Trump said on the sidelines of the NATO summit. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I\u2019d like to cut it off.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on: \u201cI don\u2019t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, including visits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump made a similar threat in March, citing Spain\u2019s lack of support for his war in Iran and resistance to increasing NATO spending.<\/p>\n

In response to Trump\u2019s comments, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez\u2019s office said that Spain \u201cmaintains an excellent social, cultural, and economic relationship with the US, and we have no intention of seeing that change.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said the Spanish government regarded such statements \u201cas a matter of routine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson referenced the U.S.\u2019 trade surplus with Spain, and the fact that the European Union handles trade for the bloc\u2019s 27 member countries.<\/p>\n
