TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Monsoon is triggering a surge in rattlesnake activity across Southern Arizona, and wildlife removal businesses say they are already seeing an increase in calls.<\/p>\n

Jeff Carver, co-owner of Arizona Animal Experts, said the increase is immediate once the rains arrive.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, we\u2019re getting an increase in snake calls, we\u2019ve gotten 3 this morning already,\u201d Carver said.<\/p>\n

Why rain draws rattlesnakes out<\/h2>\n

While snakes get most of their moisture from prey, Carver said fresh rain pools are an additional draw.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey still like to have the water, and it helps them with everything from bodily functions to shedding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Where snakes are hiding<\/h2>\n

Carver said rattlesnakes are not always found where people expect them.<\/p>\n

\u201cTypically, they\u2019re hunkered down in corners, under the patio furniture\u2026pots and plants by front doors,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of my pet peeves when people put the beautiful pot with the plants cascading down right by the front door \u2014 you\u2019d be surprised how many times we get the snakes right there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carver said the snakes are not actively seeking out people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe snake is not lying in wait for us. They don\u2019t want to hunt us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that the rattlesnake\u2019s signature sound is a warning, not an attack signal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rattle serves no other purpose… it is to warn us \u2018Hey I\u2019m here, leave me alone,\u2019\u201d Carver said.<\/p>\n

Snake repellents, pets, and handling<\/h2>\n

For those considering commercial snake repellents, Carver said the products are not effective.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just don\u2019t care… they\u2019re more likely to affect the rodent… than they are the snake,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Pet owners should also take precautions. Carver said dogs are particularly vulnerable because of how they investigate their surroundings.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost dog bites are on the face and head… the big part of our snake training for dogs is to train them for that scent so that they avoid that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Carver also warned against attempting to handle a snake without proper equipment, noting that bites often follow risky behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cNormally I tell people that most snake bites occur on males between the ages of 16 and 25 \u2014 go figure \u2014 that\u2019s usually right after the statement \u2018hold my beer,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
