Court paperwork from the time of the investigation said Clabron was under the influence and handling a gun when it fired and struck Aviles, who was killed in May 2023 while visiting a friend\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018There is no closure\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Aviles\u2019 mother, Olga Lopez, says she felt numb when the verdict was read on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is news for so many and it\u2019s a story for so many,\u201d Lopez said. \u201cBut this is our life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez said for more than three years, she was hopeful for a conviction that didn\u2019t come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no closure for a family who tragically loses a child,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Before the case went to trial, Lopez said she raised concerns about how Mesa Police handled the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubpar investigation,\u201d said Lopez.<\/p>\n<p>With no conviction in her son\u2019s death, Lopez is left to wonder if that investigation cost him justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too late for my son. It\u2019s too late for our case,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it would be unjust if we didn\u2019t highlight the outcomes of this verdict with the police department who failed us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=3072\">ICE arrests 10,000 in 5 days, a sharp late-June surge in Trump\u2019s deportation push<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mesa Police declined to comment on this case when reached out to with Lopez\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Maricopa County Attorney\u2019s Office said the prosecution was made significantly harder with the death of a key witness, but MCAO respects the jury\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Lopez said she plans to keep her son\u2019s legacy alive through advocacy, as well the \u201cJeremiah Aviles Foundation\u201d which supports high school seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Jeremiah is not what happened to him,\u201d Lopez said. \u201cMy Jeremiah is an extraordinary young man who\u2019s doing extraordinary things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>See a spelling or grammatical error in our story? <\/i><i>Please click here to report it<\/i><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Do you have a photo or video of a breaking news story?
