TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The man whose dogs killed a neighbor in Pima County last year has reached a plea deal in the case.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, June 30, Martin Lopez Martinez pleaded guilty to one count of negligent homicide, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of keeping vicious or destructive animals. <\/p>\n

Martinez had been facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of 43-year-old Kevin Renguul near South Mark Road and West Los Reales Road in 2025.<\/p>\n

The Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department said Martinez\u2019s dogs — mixed breeds, including German Shepherd, pitbull, Cane Corso, and Mastiff — had histories of being aggressive and attacking neighbors.<\/p>\n

The PCSD had three previous reports of Martinez\u2019s dogs biting people. Since 2022, PACC has received eight additional reports of people getting attacked by his animals. In some of the cases, neighbors said their pets were killed or injured.<\/p>\n

Martinez was also ordered to take an animal cruelty prevention class from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona and told he cannot possess or live with animals for the entire probation period.<\/p>\n

Martinez was already on probation for a 2020 case, so his probation for that one was revoked following his guilty plea.<\/p>\n

He is set to be sentenced at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n

According to court documents, Renguul needed 15 blood transfusions and went through two surgeries before passing away. He had to be intubated and was hooked up to machines when his lung and kidney functions declined.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just sad that Mr. Renguul, fight as he will, these are some pretty big dogs,\u201d Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at the time of the attack.<\/p>\n
