MESA, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A man wearing tactical gear and another person are dead after a shooting in a Mesa neighborhood late Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Around 8 p.m., first responders were called to the area of Lindsay and Brown roads.<\/p>\n

Police said a man identified as 47-year-old Kevin Richardson was wearing a tactical helmet and vest when he fired several rounds at other people and at the Mesa Police helicopter.<\/p>\n

Authorities arrived on the ground and they said they found Richardson dead after he took his own life. A rifle was found nearby, police said.<\/p>\n

Officers say Richardson killed the driver of a red truck riddled with bullets before turning the rifle on himself. It\u2019s unclear what their relationship was to Richardson. That person has not been identified.<\/p>\n

A father and his 14-year-old son were struck by gunfire inside their home, 16-year-old witness Ethan Robinson said. Both are expected to survive their injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were just minding their own business in their house and out of nowhere bullets started ripping through their wall and they got hit,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n

That family was not the intended target. Bullet holes were found in the walls, garage, and a van at the home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mom was just telling everyone to get down and what not and there were bullets ripping through the walls going over their head \u2014 just a terrifying situation,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cThey had babies in the home; they had another daughter in the home. It could have been so much worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gunfire struck at least two neighboring homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw the police have long guns and their pistols drawn taking cover behind their cars yelling commands at the shooter to stay down,\u201d said Ethan Robinson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was almost like God told us to leave. We left ten minutes before this happened,\u201d said Breana Robinson.<\/p>\n

Breana Robinson lives a few doors down from Richardson with her husband and young children.<\/p>\n

\u201cKevin was always so calm, kind,\u201d Breana Robinson said.<\/p>\n

Richardson\u2019s fianc\u00e9e declined to comment out of respect for his daughters when Arizona\u2019s Family stopped by the house. Neighbors said Richardson had recently told people he was looking forward to a camping trip over the Fourth of July weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was an isolated problem but I\u2019m not still very comfortable letting my kids go outside anymore,\u201d Breana Robinson said. \u201cWe\u2019re praying for the son and father that they recover and get home soon and that they can feel safe in their home again.\u201d<\/p>\n
