CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A Chandler man is facing possible prison time after admitting to helping with dozens of illegal gun sales at his Phoenix store, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Alejandro Montemayor, 33, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a false statement during the purchase of a firearm and to failing to file a report related to currency.<\/p>\n

Investigators said while he ran AV AZ Firearms at Cave Creek and Bell roads between Jan. 6, 2022, and May 29, 2024, he admitted helping with straw purchases, where someone buys a gun for another person, and later transferred at least 72 firearms to others.<\/p>\n

One example prosecutors pointed to was when Montemayor helped a person lie on a federal form by saying they were the real gun buyer, even though Montemayor knew that wasn\u2019t true. He then gave a gun to another person.<\/p>\n

He also did not report sales of more than $10,000 15 times between Feb. 23, 2024, and May 14, 2024, totaling more than $258,000.<\/p>\n

Montemayor faces up to 15 years in prison and up to $750,000 in fines.<\/p>\n

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 17.<\/p>\n
