Her family said she was by the pool for about an hour, tanning on a metal chair, when she fell asleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe went to the pool, sat in a chair and fell asleep. The chair had some metal on it,\u201d her daughter, Michelle Gabbert, said.<\/p>\n<p>Other people at the pool found Summer unconscious. She was suffering from heat stroke and had third-degree burns across her body.<\/p>\n<h2>Treated at burn center<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe whole front of her body, all the way down to basically the muscle and the bone, is burned. And it\u2019s significant,\u201d Gabbert said.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics took Summer to Valleywise Burn Center, where she was also diagnosed with severe shock, liver damage and kidney damage.<\/p>\n<p>Gabbert said her mother has needed several surgeries and was put on a ventilator and dialysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw her and saw the condition that she was in, I really didn\u2019t think she was going to pull through because I\u2019ve seen time and time again how this ends up,\u201d Gabbert said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2554\">Southern Arizona fire districts prepare crews for extreme heat response<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Summer is expected to be in the hospital for at least another month.<\/p>\n<h2>Family shares warning<\/h2>\n<p>Gabbert said her mother is still fighting, with a long recovery ahead.<\/p>\n<p>She said the family is sharing Summer\u2019s story as a warning about Arizona\u2019s summer heat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have never in a million years imagined one of my family members having to go through this,\u201d Gabbert said.<\/p>\n<p>Valleywise Burn Center said older adults and children are more at risk of significant burns during Arizona\u2019s heat each year.<\/p>\n<p>The burn center said people should wear skin protection, limit time outdoors, carry a towel, blanket or other barrier, and keep a close eye on loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe heat is no joke,\u201d Gabbert said.<\/p>\n<p><i>See a spelling or grammatical error in our story? <\/i><i>Please click here to report it<\/i><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Do you have a photo or video of a breaking news story?
