{"id":2356,"date":"2026-06-19T17:34:33","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T17:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2356"},"modified":"2026-06-19T17:34:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T17:34:33","slug":"rock-canyon-fire-doubles-in-size-overnight-near-arizona-utah-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2356","title":{"rendered":"Rock Canyon fire doubles in size overnight near Arizona-Utah border"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><section><p><b>FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 The Rock Canyon Fire, burning in northern Arizona near the border with Utah, doubled in size overnight to 4,512 acres and was 5% contained.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2354\">Juneteenth art expo celebrates freedom through culture, food and \u201cnourishment\u201d<\/a><\/p><p>The fire has caused firefighters to evacuate hikers and campers in the area, and some roads in the Kaibab National Forest are closed.<\/p><p>People in Jacob Lake \u2014 less than 20 miles from the Rock Canyon Fire \u2014 say the new fire is stirring up anxiety after last year\u2019s devastating fire season. They say they\u2019re confident in firefighters, but after the trauma, they\u2019re still holding their breath.<\/p><div><div><div><noscript>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"map visualization\" class=\"wp-image-122\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c57f3f27ef1154bd7d9ca13dc49a8c44-768x489.jpg\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c57f3f27ef1154bd7d9ca13dc49a8c44-768x489.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c57f3f27ef1154bd7d9ca13dc49a8c44-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c57f3f27ef1154bd7d9ca13dc49a8c44.jpg 1020w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/noscript><\/div><\/div><\/div><h2>Memories of last year\u2019s fires<\/h2><p>For over 100 years, Jacob Lake Inn has been serving cookies to guests who want to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon or explore the Kaibab National Forest. Melinda Rich Marshall\u2019s family has owned the inn since 1923.<\/p><p>Last year, they were evacuated during the White Sage Fire that burned close to 60,000 acres, and then the Dragon Bravo Fire, which destroyed nearly 150,000 acres, shut down the North Rim.<\/p><p>Now the Rock Canyon Fire has already burned thousands of acres north of the inn.<\/p><p>\u201cI mean, honestly, our reaction was not again,\u201d Rich Marshall said. \u201cI mean, that\u2019s really what it was.\u201d<\/p><p>Rich Marshall said last year was hard enough, so once they heard about this new fire, it brought back bad memories.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019d say we have a little PTSD from it, seeing smoke and smelling smoke and all those things,\u201d she said.<\/p><h2>Fire burning in old burn scar<\/h2><p>The Rock Canyon Fire was sparked over the weekend by a lightning strike.<\/p><p>Parts of it are burning in the White Sage burn scar. Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Dolores Garcia said old burn scars will usually slow down a new fire, but this time it\u2019s actually fueling the flames.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2352\">What to expect at Buc-ee\u2019s grand opening in Goodyear<\/a><\/p><p>\u201cIn some of those areas, we\u2019re seeing quite a bit of fuels,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cWe\u2019re not seeing that the burn scar is helping much, especially with the winds as strong as they\u2019ve been in some days and as dry as it\u2019s been, those fuels are just tender and cured and really flammable.\u201d<\/p><p>She said firefighters are attacking it from the ground and the air, but the high winds are limiting their ability to make water drops.<\/p><p>Hikers and campers were evacuated from the area. Garcia said she knows how stressful this must be to the surrounding communities after last year\u2019s fires.<\/p><p>\u201cWe still understand that, it\u2019s still a very fresh wound to many of the people who live up there, who\u2019ve recreated up there for years,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s definitely at the forefront of our minds.\u201d<\/p><p>Rich Marshall said while it\u2019s scary, they have full trust in the firefighters.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re really just grateful to see them and know the work that they are doing,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>Rich Marshall said this is usually their peak season, but they\u2019ve seen a bit of a slowdown even after the North rim reopened.
