TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Today is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day \u2014 marking June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were finally free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Communities across the country are recognizing the day, including here in Tucson.<\/p>\n

One local event honoring Juneteenth through art and culture is the third annual Juneteenth Art Expo at The Drawing Studio, featuring works from local African American artists. Organizers say this year\u2019s theme is \u201cNourishment,\u201d designed to take visitors on a journey through history while highlighting resistance, resilience, reverence and joy.<\/p>\n

Artists say the exhibit is about sharing culture, preserving legacy, and creating spaces for expression and community. The gallery includes a range of pieces \u2014 each carrying its own meaning \u2014 and invites visitors to reflect on the past, present and future.<\/p>\n

Beyond the artwork, the event includes an African-centered bazaar where attendees can browse and purchase items such as clothing, masks and jewelry. There\u2019s also a culinary food tour featuring 10 chefs sharing 10 stories of 10 ingredients originating from Africa \u2014 with African-inspired dishes highlighting ingredients like cacao, corn, sweet potatoes and peanuts.<\/p>\n

Organizers say the Juneteenth Art Expo is free and open to all ages, inviting the community to learn, reflect and celebrate together. Doors are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at The Drawing Studio. Juneteenth celebrations continue on June 27 with a film festival from 4 to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n
