(13 News) &#8211; Summer heat is here, and public health officials are urging everyone\u2014especially those working or spending time outdoors\u2014to take the risk seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2276\">Daveigh Chase, actress who voiced Lilo in \u2018Lilo &amp; Stitch\u2019 and starred in \u2018The Ring,\u2019 dead at 35<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year, Pima County recorded 117 heat-related deaths, and five heat-related deaths have been reported so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>And the danger isn\u2019t limited to a few days of extreme heat: heat can continue impacting people well beyond the summer months and into October.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pima County, nearly 2,000 people visit Arizona emergency rooms because of heat-related illnesses.<\/p>\n<h2>Heat illness can escalate quickly<\/h2>\n<p>Heat-related illnesses happen when your body temperature climbs too high and your body can\u2019t cool itself down.<\/p>\n<p>It can start with symptoms that may seem minor\u2014like muscle cramps, a headache, or a fast pulse\u2014but it can become life-threatening in minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tucsonmovingreport.com\/?p=2274\">WNBA expanding to 50-game regular season starting in 2027<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Heat stroke (life-threatening)<\/h3>\n<p>Watch for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><b>Body temperature 103\u00b0F or higher<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Hot, dry skin<\/b> (or skin that\u2019s hot and damp)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Fast, strong pulse<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Headache, dizziness, nausea<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Confusion<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Passing out \/ losing consciousness<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Heat exhaustion<\/h3>\n<p>Watch for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><b>Heavy sweating<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Cold, pale, clammy skin<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Fast, weak pulse<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Nausea or vomiting<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Muscle cramps<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Tiredness\/weakness<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Dizziness, headache, fainting<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What to do if someone shows symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>If you or someone you\u2019re with is showing symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Move to a <b>cooler place<\/b> (shade or indoors)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Loosen clothing<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Drink water<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Cool the person with <b>wet towels\/damp cloths<\/b>, a <b>cool shower<\/b>, <b>misting fan<\/b>, or <b>ice packs<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In more serious cases\u2014especially if someone is vomiting, symptoms worsen, or symptoms last more than an hour\u2014<b>call 911<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to prevent heat illness<\/h2>\n<p>If you can, stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.<\/p>\n<p>If you must be outside:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Wear <b>loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Use a <b>hat or umbrella<\/b> for shade<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Wear <b>sunscreen<\/b> and reapply<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Take breaks in <b>air conditioning<\/b> (even a few hours can reduce risk)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And always remember, never leave adults, children, or pets in a parked car.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is most at risk?<\/h2>\n<p>Some factors can increase your risk for heat illness, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><b>Not drinking enough water<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Obesity<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Poor circulation<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Sunburn<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Alcohol use<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><b>Having a fever<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cooling resources and checking on neighbors<\/h2>\n<p>Staying safe also means making sure you can cool down at home.
