TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Pima County Board of Supervisors decided not to take action against Sheriff Chris Nanos on Tuesday evening, May 12.<\/p>\n

The board initially considered vacating Nanos\u2019 position following concerns surrounding his work history, management of the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department, as well as other personnel and financial issues.<\/p>\n

Supervisor Steve Christy made a motion to vacate Nanos from his position, but without anyone to second the motion, it failed. Another motion to not take any action passed 4-0, with Christy abstaining.<\/p>\n

The supervisors discussed a report regarding concerns about Nanos and considered his responses to questions about his past.<\/p>\n

Despite the vote, some supervisors shared their concerns about Nanos\u2019 leadership and called on him to improve relations within the Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeadership from our sheriff is so incredibly important. And what I hope we see in the path ahead, is true leadership that looks out for the interest of the full team,\u201d said Jennifer Allen, Pima County Board of Supervisors chair.<\/p>\n

District 1 Supervisor Rex Scott said Nanos needs to take multiple steps to improve the climate within the department.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe needs to take not just the first step but the second step, the third step, the fourth step, the fifth step to try and bring up the level of climate within that department,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n

After the vote, Nanos told 13 News reporter Raya Torres he agrees with some of the supervisors\u2019 comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is my responsibility to find a way to get my team to work better, to work in a cohesive way and to help with that division that exists there, and that\u2019s what we\u2019ll work for,\u201d Nanos said.<\/p>\n

Nanos said he plans to connect with the Pima County Deputy\u2019s Organization to address that many of his employees have low confidence in him.<\/p>\n

Supervisor Scott said during the meeting that over 250 members of the Pima County Deputies Organization expressed a vote in no confidence in Nanos.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re there to solve problems, and it\u2019s hard to solve problems if I can\u2019t solve problems within my own organization, so that\u2019s where I\u2019m at and that\u2019s where I\u2019ll be working,\u201d Nanos said.<\/p>\n

The Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department sent 13 News a statement after the board\u2019s vote:<\/p>\n

Sheriff Chris Nanos was elected to lead the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department and focus on public safety in our community, and that remains his priority. Sheriff Nanos has heard Supervisor Scott\u2019s concerns and agrees that if there are issues within the agency, it is his responsibility to address them. He plans to meet with union leadership to discuss concerns and determine a constructive path forward.<\/i><\/p>\n

The supervisor\u2019s decision also includes the board forwarding any perjury allegations to the Attorney General\u2019s Office for review and investigation.<\/p>\n
