MESA, AZ (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A Mesa family says they received an unexpected delivery while preparing to lay their grandmother to rest.<\/p>\n

Dorothy Kuspis, known as \u201cNanny\u201d to her granddaughter Ashleigh Wegner, died May 27 at 98. Wegner said her family expected the loss, but the reality still hit hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe lived a good life,\u201d Wegner said. \u201cSo it wasn\u2019t a surprise, but it was kind of a\u2014with anything, any loss\u2014kind of a shock when it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the days that followed, the family began making arrangements, including selecting an urn. Wegner said her mother and uncles chose an urn for Kuspis, and the family also set aside a small portion of cremated remains for close relatives.<\/p>\n

Wegner decided to purchase a small keepsake urn\u2014a brass heart\u2014from Amazon.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came within a couple days,\u201d Wegner said. \u201cWhen I opened it, it was just a little dusty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, she said, the process took a disturbing turn.<\/p>\n

\u201cI unscrewed the back and that\u2019s when I noticed it still had remains inside of it,\u201d Wegner said. \u201cAnd that was like, I have \u2014 who are you and what are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wegner said the urn appeared to be new, but was caked with ashes that did not belong to her grandmother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was shocked,\u201d Wegner said. \u201cI was kind of grossed out. I was uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wegner said this is not the first time she has encountered unidentified cremated remains.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had a past similar situation,\u201d she said. \u201cSo a few years back, me and my husband came across a box of ashes in an alleyway where we lived.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said they turned the remains over to the sheriff\u2019s department, which located the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said they weren\u2019t interested or for whatever reason, they just didn\u2019t want the remains,\u201d Wegner said.<\/p>\n

Wegner said she and her husband then spread those ashes in the Arizona mountains. Now, she said, they plan to do something similar with the ashes found inside the keepsake urn \u2014 this time near Flagstaff \u2014 because she does not want them to end up back in circulation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want it to end up on the warehouse shelf again and have somebody else make a purchase and have it accidentally get shipped to someone else in a moment like this,\u201d Wegner said.<\/p>\n

Wegner said she contacted Amazon and was told she would receive a refund. She also said she reached out to the third-party seller but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n

We also reached out to the seller and are waiting to hear back.<\/p>\n

Wegner said she has since received a replacement keepsake urn.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust as I expected,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
