Most individuals infected with the virus will not experience symptoms. About one in five may develop a flu-like illness with fever, headache and body aches. In rare cases, the virus can cause severe complications that may lead to paralysis, long-term disability or death.

Older adults, people with underlying health conditions and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.

Those experiencing symptoms following mosquito exposure should contact a healthcare provider.

“West Nile Virus is the leading cause of disease spread by mosquitoes in the United States,” said Dr. Theresa Cullen, Pima County health director. “While most infections are mild, they can be severe for some individuals.”

Cullen said the best way to avoid the virus is to take precautions and avoid getting bit by a mosquito.

Prevention steps

Health officials recommend residents keep mosquitoes off their body by wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and using insect repellent on exposed skin.

Read more Police release more details about deadly car fire near Kolb, Escalante

Residents should check their yard for areas that collect water. Standing water is the ideal place for mosquitoes to breed and monsoon rains can create new breeding sites quickly. Unused outdoor pet bowls, plant containers, tires or other items should not be allowed to collect water.

Residents should check window screens for holes and repair them immediately. Doors should not be left open without a screen door to act as a mosquito barrier.

Health officials recommend using mosquito repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Residents should repair leaky pipes and outside faucets and move air conditioner drain hoses frequently.

Mosquitoes are active day and night throughout the year.

Residents can report mosquito breeding sites or standing water concerns by calling 520-724-7908.

====================================================

Are you streaming 13 News?

Watch a free live stream of Tucson Now and 13 News at TucsonNow.Live.

Be sure to download the free Tucson Now app which you can find on Apple and Google.

If you are using a desktop computer, you can use your mobile device to scan the QR code below.

Read more Domestic violence suspect taken into custody following standoff at Tucson apartment complex

You can submit your breaking news or weather images here.

The county detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes through routine surveillance activities and is anticipating an active mosquito season.

[1

post-2141","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-interesting
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
