TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Community college graduates in Arizona earn $9,100 more per year than people with only a high school diploma, according to a new state report.<\/p>\n

The shows Arizona\u2019s community colleges added $15.2 billion to the state economy in 2024.<\/p>\n

Ryan Moreno Si\u2019al was born on the Tohono O\u2019odham reservation and grew up in foster care. He said he barely graduated from high school, but decided to give community college a try.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really an angry, lonely child,\u201d Si\u2019al said.<\/p>\n

Si\u2019al said he failed his first Algebra 2 exam at Pima Community College.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, oh my gosh, I don\u2019t think I can do this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But he said he got a B on the second test and was soon getting A\u2019s. He is now doing differential equations.<\/p>\n

Pima Community College Chancellor Dr. Jeffrey Nasse said student success pays off for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes a huge difference in a student\u2019s life to have a credential from a community college \u2013 or any degree, really \u2013 it makes a big difference for them,\u201d Nasse said.<\/p>\n

With the average Arizona income at $43,000 per year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, community college graduates earn an average of $52,100 annually.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople that have a college credential \u2013 a college degree \u2013 yes, they make more money, and that\u2019s wonderful, but they\u2019re also healthier, they\u2019re more engaged, it\u2019s a better thing for communities,\u201d Nasse said.<\/p>\n

Si\u2019al said he will be the first in his family to earn a college degree.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents never did it, my grandparents never did it. But now, I\u2019ll be the first one in my family to do that and change my family tree,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Si\u2019al will graduate next week with his associate\u2019s degree in engineering.<\/p>\n
