TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The U.S. defeated Paraguay 4-1 Friday<\/b><\/u><\/i> in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Friday, June 12, and fans across Tucson gathered to celebrate the win.<\/p>\n

Crowds were electric from the beginning as they watched the US score more goals than in any World Cup game it has played. <\/p>\n

It was also the first time a World Cup match had been played on U.S. soil in more than three decades. <\/p>\n

According to the Associated Press, more than 70,000 passionate soccer enthusiasts to the massive stadium near Los Angeles.<\/b><\/u><\/i> Some paid thousands of dollars to see their team play on the biggest global stage for a sport that has long been eclipsed in the United States \u2014 a sport many say is finally having its moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were here in \u201994, hosting the tournament; we get it again 32 years later, and it\u2019s a dream come true twice in a lifetime,\u201d said fan Adam Amparano.<\/p>\n

Some fans said the location made the win extra special.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a different experience with the cup being here, like that\u2019s just out of the realm of the normal situation with soccer and football in general,\u201d said Brett Shelby.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is huge, to be in L.A., especially what\u2019s going on with everything in the world right now, to have USA representing in America, it\u2019s amazing,\u201d said Brandon Dillon.<\/p>\n

Amparano said the tournament could change the game of soccer in America, which he said has struggled to gain fans and develop talent over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a chance to create more fans, isn\u2019t it? I mean, soccer\u2019s always an afterthought; it\u2019s kind of a niche kind of sport, but maybe it can be one of the mainstream sports,\u201d Amparano said.<\/p>\n

After the win, Amparano said he\u2019s hopeful that the dream could become a reality, especially if the U.S. wins its group.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna run into a tough team in the knockout rounds, and you know, with a little bit of luck on our side and playing at home, maybe we can have a nice run and a dream come true, you know,\u201d Amparano said.<\/p>\n

Dillon said he\u2019s optimistic about the team\u2019s chances.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re gonna go all the way. We\u2019re gonna beat France, we\u2019re gonna beat Holland, whoever it is, we\u2019re gonna do it,\u201d Dillon said.<\/p>\n

After the win, the U.S. will face Australia next Friday before wrapping up the group stage with a match against Turkey on June 25.<\/p>\n
