PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A wanted felon is dead after police shot and killed him near a north Phoenix intersection Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said the man was wanted on sex crimes against a child and the department\u2019s tactical unit tracked him down while he was driving in the area.<\/p>\n

As he passed the 23rd Avenue intersection while heading west on Pinnacle Peak Road, Lewis said a K-9 handler in his truck used a grappler to bring the suspect\u2019s SUV to a stop.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The handler) was joined by another detective, and that\u2019s when the officer-involved shooting took place,\u201d Lewis said.<\/p>\n

The suspect, in his 50s, died at the scene. His name has not been released. Police said no officers were hurt in the shooting.<\/p>\n

Lewis did not say whether the wanted felon was armed. \u201cWe\u2019re going to talk to the officers to get their recollection of what they observed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting.<\/p>\n

Pinnacle Peak Road is closed from 23rd Avenue to Interstate 17, so police are asking the public to avoid the area.<\/p>\n

This is the 21st officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 43rd in Arizona in 2026, according to Arizona\u2019s Family records.<\/p>\n
