PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 The Arizona Humane Society is making an urgent plea to the public to adopt after multiple puppies were found abandoned at one of its Phoenix locations during the span of a week.<\/p>\n

Officials said the pups were left alone at their Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus at 55th Street and Van Buren Street.<\/p>\n

On May 19, an employee found a 9-week-old American pit bull puppy covered in ticks and left in the sun in the back of the facility. Officials said the pup, named Layne, was anemic and underweight, but they nursed him back to health. He is now in a foster home.<\/p>\n

About a week later, a 10-week-old boxer puppy was left in the donation bin in the sun, and another box contained three dead littermates.<\/p>\n

The pup, now named Dumpling, had the highly contagious, deadly parvovirus and recovered in the ICU. Dumpling is now available for adoption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese incidents underscore the increasing strain on animal welfare organizations as pet overpopulation, housing instability and limited access to affordable pet care continue to impact communities across the valley,\u201d the Arizona Humane Society said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The organization said its Animal Rescue and Cruelty Team has responded to approximately 1,200 calls for pets that have been abandoned, in addition to pets left at its campuses.<\/p>\n

The Humane Society said it is on pace to care for more than 28,000 sick, injured and abused pets in 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith continued population growth, rising housing costs, evictions and a shortage of affordable veterinary care, the organization has seen increasing numbers of pets surrendered or abandoned throughout Maricopa County,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n

Pet owners who need help can visit azhumane.org\/resources for more information on support services.<\/p>\n

Those who are interested in adopting can view all available pets at azhumane.org\/adopt.<\/p>\n

The Arizona Humane Society is offering zero adoption fees for pets 1 year and older from Saturday to Tuesday.<\/p>\n
