TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – One man was injured, and another was arrested Thursday, June 4, following yet another violent incident connected to public transportation in Tucson.<\/p>\n

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said there was a knife attack on a Sun Tran bus near Alameda and Church.<\/p>\n

The TPD said it was a fight between two men. One was detained, while the other was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.<\/p>\n

Violence connected to public transit in Tucson has been a huge issue for more than a year now.<\/p>\n

In 2020, the city of Tucson suspended transit fares due to the pandemic, and many have pointed to the free fares as a reason for an apparent uptick in violence. One common complaint is that the lack of fares attracts open drug use and violent members of the homeless community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI join our community in demanding that people who commit violent crimes on our buses are held accountable for their actions and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d Romero said in a release. \u201cOur bus riders and operators deserve to be safe on our buses and in our public spaces. We are continuing to work with the Department of Transportation and Mobility, Sun Tran, and TPD to accelerate the implementation of our Transit Safety and Security plan immediately to improve safety for our riders and operators.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since April 2025, 13 News has reported on at least 21 violent crimes connected to Sun Tran. While only one person died, several victims suffered life-changing injuries. A breakdown of those incidents is below.<\/p>\n

PUBLIC TRANSIT VIOLENCE<\/b><\/h3>\n

13 News has reported 19 violent crimes connected to public transit in Tucson since April 5, 2025. In most of those incidents, a knife or hatchet was used.<\/p>\n
