TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Pima County released results of a survey that gauged Loop users\u2019 opinions on the trail and showed people have concerns about safety.<\/p>\n

The Chuck Huckelberry Loop is more than 130 miles and sees 20,000 visitors every month. The trail has seen complaints from users about safety in recent months, especially following a stabbing that killed one cyclist last September.<\/p>\n

Sixty percent of respondents from the county\u2019s survey said they feel the Loop is not safe. Two-thirds of the comments that mention a lack of safety attribute it to homeless encampments, drug use, crime and harassment.<\/p>\n

Loop users also noted safety issues when it comes to people following rules, including issues with speed, signage and the use of e-bikes and motorized vehicles on the trail.<\/p>\n

Others said navigation, including directional signs, mile markers and maps, shaded areas and water stations could also use some improvement.<\/p>\n

Paul Handlin, a longtime Loop user, said he thinks those survey results are accurate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a young guy, probably 16 or 17 years old, ride up next to me and look at me and look at my bike and look at me and look at my bike. He didn\u2019t have a helmet or nothing he wasn\u2019t a professional rider, and somebody said yeah he\u2019s just scoping you out. It\u2019s like okay\u2026 this isn\u2019t good,\u201d Handlin said.<\/p>\n

Handlin said he thinks the Loop is the greatest thing southern Arizona has to offer. As someone who cycles 40 miles at least every other day on the trail, he said crime and homelessness in some areas are getting hard to deal with.<\/p>\n
